The Graduate School hosts events of special interest to diverse students to create a rich, vibrant, inclusive campus community. We also host and participate in on and off-campus recruitment events aimed at increasing the diversity of our graduate students.

"Inspiring Greatness for the 21st Century"

Alliance Day unites secondary school students through graduate students from underrepresented minorities (URM) to encourage and promote continued education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (STEM) and the social, behavioral and economic sciences (SBES).

NC OPT-ED Alliance Day features:
* Student Poster Presentations
* Student Oral Presentations
* Informative Workshops
* Undergraduate and Graduate Recruitment Fair

NC OPT-ED invites students participating in CREST, HBCU-UP, LSAMP, NC-MSEN, NC-TABS, AGEP and SBE and other programs and Institutions to attend. Students will have the opportunity to participate in either the poster or oral presentations, so please submit your abstracts.

Mentoring Workshop for Current and Future Faculty "Mentoring & Diversity - Gateway to Empowerment": Monday March 31, 2008, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; The McKimmon Center at North Carolina State University - Raleigh, NC; The Workshop will feature a panel discussion titled “Mentoring as a Means to Increase the Participation of Underrepresented Groups”. The panel members are recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. The agenda also features breakout sessions designed for current faculty members, post-docs, and graduate students.; Event Flyer
Graduate Minority Task Force: Monday, March 17, 2008, 11:00–12:00 p.m.; The Graduate Student Center, 211A West Cameron Ave.; This will be the first meeting of the Graduate Minority Task Force.
First Fridays: Friday, March 7, 2008, 5:00–7:00 p.m.; The Graduate Student Center, 211A West Cameron Ave.; First Fridays is a retention activity of Minority Recruitment and Retention. As the name suggests, this event takes place on the first Friday of each month. Events are graduate student-centered with programming ideas coming from graduate students. The events are social and informational by design and are, at times, collaborative efforts from across the campus and the Graduate School. Join us each month for First Fridays!; Topic: Educational Video Evening; This Friday's theme is educational video evening! We will view and discuss “Design: The Economies of Being Environmentally Conscious” by Director Ted Fettig. There will be food/refreshments.
American Indian Graduate Student Recruitment Event: March 6-7, 2008; The Graduate School; An opportunity for prospective American Indian graduate students to visit with Carolina graduate students and faculty and learn about graduate education opportunities and strategies.
New Directions in American Indian Research Conference: March 7–8, 2008; The Graduate School; This conference showcases the scholarship of American Indian graduate students in all fields of study as well as scholarship by all graduate students on topics and issues of relevance to Native communities.

Sister Circle: Thursday, November 1, 2007, 5:00–7:00 p.m.; The Graduate Student Center, 211A West Cameron Ave.; With guest speaker, Dr. Clara Sue Kidwell; A collaborative program between the UNC-Chapel Hill Graduate School and the Carolina Women’s Center, Sister Circle is a networking forum that brings together women of color (faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) from the University to discuss issues relevant to women in the academy and in the broader society. Forums include speakers, social gatherings, scholarly presentations, among other events.

Sixth Annual NC OPT-ED Alliance Day: September 28, 2007; Greensboro, NC; Each year, NC OPT-ED sponsors Alliance Day, an all day event joining students from all 11 institutions involved in the NC OPT-ED Alliance. Alliance Day showcases informative workshops, student presentations and a keynote address targeted to the unique needs of the underrepresented minority students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (STEM) and social, behavioral, and economic sciences (SBES) fields. The event brings together students from all stages in their academic careers and provides pertinent knowledge to help each student progress to the next stage and ultimately enter the professorate.
