While visiting London in 1933, Mrs. Katherine Pendleton Arrington saw two gargoyle carvings
being removed from the Big Ben clock tower. The two statues were only eighty years old, but were being replaced
because London weather had so badly deteriorated them. Mrs. Arrington, a generous patron of the arts in
North Carolina, received permission to purchase the two gargoyles and a statue of Stephen Langton, Archbishop
of Canterbury in the 13th century. The statues were shipped to Chapel Hill as a gift to the University. The
gargoyles now crouch outside the doorways on the south side of Person Hall. [29] [30].
